These were determined by several factors such as the number of adults who were insured, number of insured children, the accessibility of their health care. Those states with all these factors were colored with dark blue on the map which they created. Those with better health care systems had color white.

Their report also found that there are states which had far better access to health care, quality of health care services with affordable costs. The firm also stated that a wide spread within the geography will still continue. They also said that if those states with poor systems can fill in the gap from the top states, then a lot of lives can be saved because of better health care.

Early deaths are noted on states which have poor health care systems. But, this problem can be prevented if these states can provide easy access to premiere and top notch health care facilities. Most of them are located in the Southern part and are also considered to be part of the list of the poorest states in the nation.

Out of the 26 states which are at the bottom of the scorecard or map provided by the research firm, 16 states failed to expand their Medicaid under the Obamacare. Medicare is very important because this is one of the vital tools provided by the Obamacare so that the less fortunate ones can still gain access to good health care. However, some states would require more than just the mere expansion of Medicaid.

Parents clueless that their kids are abusing prescribed drugs

(NaturalNews) Although prescription drug abuse among both children and adults now rivals illegal street drugs in both prevalence and lethality, most parents are not particularly concerned about such abuse among children and teenagers, according to the most recent University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health.

In addition, parental support is weak for many proposed policies that could help restrict access to commonly abused narcotic painkillers like Oxcycontin or Vicodin.

“This is a national problem and a growing problem,” researcher Sarah J. Clark said. “The results of this poll are a signal that parents may not be aware of the significant rates of misuse of narcotic pain medicine, which highlights the tremendous challenge of addressing this national problem.”

Only 35 percent of parents said that they were “very concerned” about the misuse of narcotic painkillers (opioids) by children and teenagers in their own communities. Even fewer – 19 percent – were very concerned about the misuse of such drugs in their own families. Strikingly, white parents had the lowest rates of concern (13 percent) about abuse in their families, compared with Hispanic (26 percent) or black (38 percent parents), even though painkiller abuse is three times higher among white teenagers than among black or Hispanic teenagers. White parents were also significantly less likely than black or Hispanic parents to support policies that would limit children’s access to prescription painkillers.

Parents underestimate seriousness of problem

Recent studies have shown that more overdose deaths are caused by narcotic painkillers than by cocaine and heroin combined. Nationwide, rates of prescription drug abuse now equal or outstrip those of all illegal street drugs combined.

In addition, studies have shown that 75 percent of narcotic painkiller abusers obtain the drugs from someone with a valid prescription – typically either themselves, a friend or a relative. The new poll confirmed the ease with which children and teenagers can obtain such drugs: 35 percent of parents said that they had received at least one pain drug for their children in the past five years, with half of these being narcotics. 66 percent of parents had received a prescription painkiller for at least one household adult in the past five years.

Yet, nearly 50 percent of parents surveyed said they did not support requirements that people return unused pain drugs to a doctor or pharmacy, and 59 percent did not favor a requirement that painkiller prescription refills be obtained only from a doctor’s office.

66 percent of parents did support laws that would require parents to show identification before purchasing a narcotic painkiller for a child, while 57 percent supported regulations prohibiting people from obtaining a narcotic painkiller prescription from more than one doctor. But in general, the researchers noted, the parental responses indicated a low level of concern about the problem.

“Recent estimates are that one in four high school seniors have ever used a narcotic pain medicine. However, parents may downplay the risks of narcotic pain medicine because they are prescribed by a doctor,” Clark said.

    Thousands rally around the country to support gun rights and freedoms

    (NaturalNews) Scores of rallies held Jan. 20 around the country to demonstrate support for the Second Amendment and opposition to new gun control regulations proposed by President Obama and some Democrats in Congress drew thousands in a rare show of constitutional solidarity, reports said.

    The “high noon” rallies, as they were called, sprang up following renewed debate over stricter gun control policies that are being pushed in the wake of the tragic murder of 20 young children and six adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in mid-December.

    “We are law-abiding citizens, business owners, military, and we are not going to be responsible for other people’s criminal actions,” former Marine Damon Locke said to applause at a Florida rally he helped organize, Reuters reported.

    ‘It’s about control’

    Some attendees in the crowd of about 1,000 in Brooksville, located an hour north of Tampa, held signs saying, “Stop the Gun Grabbers,” and, “Gun control isn’t about guns, it’s about control.”

    The president has asked Congress to enact new legislation that would essentially reinstate a ban on military look-alike weapons, high capacity magazines over 10 rounds and other provisions. Several states have already begun debating new gun control legislation, though the state of New York broadened its existing ban on so-called “assault weapons.”

    In addition to bans and ammunition limitations, Obama wants universal background checks for all guns purchased, including those bought at gun shows and from private individuals.

    Rallies were held in all 50 states, the Washington Times reported.

    At the statehouse in Connecticut, where state lawmakers have already taken up measures to tighten existing gun control laws, about 1,000 gun owners and supporters showed up to rally, few if any of them happy about new legislation many said still would not prevent future Sandy Hooks.

    “They could take away the 10-round magazine today and tomorrow it would be the five-round and the next day it would be the whole thing,” gun owner Jessie Buchanan, who attended the rally in Hartford, told Reuters.

    ‘I’ve earned my Second Amendment rights’

    In Denver, where 500-plus folks rallied, Don Dobyns, an Air Force veteran and former police officer from Colorado Springs, said, “I have earned the right to have my guns.”

    “All I want is my Second Amendment rights. I’ve earned them,” he said. “Nobody that hasn’t even served has a right to take them away from us.”

    Others said Obama’s 23 new executive orders aimed mostly at tightening up existing gun rules and signed in front of four children the White House said wrote to him asking for new gun control laws would do nothing to stop future massacres – which, despite being horrific, are extremely rare in a country where nearly 80 million households have firearms.

    “The [executive] orders do nothing to make us safer,” said Robert Wareham, a Colorado attorney specializing in gun rights, the Times reported. “They placate special interest groups to keep them happy and motivated, but [they are] not going to do a single thing to keep us safer.”

    The Times said the idea to stage the rallies reportedly came from Eric Reed, a Texas airline pilot, who said he wanted to send “a very, very strong message to Congress and to our president that we the people are against any more gun control.”

    The scientists behind the study, who are from the Harvard School of Public Health and the University of East Anglia in the UK, note there are high levels of naturally occurring compounds called dietary flavonoids in blueberries and strawberries. These flavonoids are also found in grapes and wine, blackberries, eggplant, and other fruits. According to the new research, berries contain a specific sub-class of flavonoids, called anthocyanins, which help keep arteries open, and may provide other cardiovascular benefits — including preventing the buildup of heart attack-causing plaque.

    The researchers came up with their results by studying 93,600 women between the ages 25 to 42 who were registered with the Nurses’ Health Study II. The women filled out questionnaires about their diet every four years for 18 years and, during this time, 405 heart attacks occurred. It turns out that the women who ate the most blueberries and strawberries had a large reduction in their risk of heart attack, about 32 percent, compared to women who ate the berries once a month or less. The findings held up even when the research team looked at possible risk factors for heart attack — such as age, high blood pressure, family history of heart attack, body mass, exercise, smoking, caffeine or alcohol intake.

    “Blueberries and strawberries can easily be incorporated into what women eat every week,” Eric Rimm D.Sc., senior author and Associate Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, said in a press statement. “This simple dietary change could have a significant impact on prevention efforts.”

    Whether a particular carbohydrate is digestible ultimately depends on your personal physiology. For instance, lactose is made up of one glucose and one galactose molecule. The Department of Health and Human Services is issuing a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits these reports in any way.

    What this means is that doctor-patient confidentiality is now history. Even worse, doctors are being pressed to start interrogating patients about whether they own guns so that this information can be reported to the government. This is all being done under the cover of so-called “gun safety” but it’s really about turning doctors into devious government spies who conduct covert patient interrogations under the cover of providing them with health care. Once collected by the government, this information will then be used to seize guns from those individuals under some kind of mental health designation.

    This is all an extension of the current medical police state in which parents who say no to vaccinations for their children are threatened with having their children kidnapped by government thugs (CPS) if they don’t provide consent for the mass vaccination of their child (often with 6+ vaccines all at once).

    Parents have also been arrested and / or threatened for refusing to consent to chemotherapy for their teen children who are diagnosed with cancer.

    It’s not clear how these new executive orders are intended to prevent people from having their guns stolen and then used in a violent crime, as happened with the recent Sandy Hook shooting. Rather than actually preventing crime, this executive order seems aimed at labeling gun owners mentally ill by recruiting doctors into a government-run health care spy network.

    The Centers for Disease Control — the same government agency that routinely lies about flu pandemics and vaccines — is also being ordered by Obama to “research the causes and prevention of gun violence.”

    This is doublespeak for having the CDC label gun ownership a “pandemic” and produce maps showing the “hot spots” of gun ownership that must be targeted with disarmament efforts in order to stop the spread of the “disease.”

    Remember: The CDC routinely fabricates information to pursue its political agenda. The oft-quoted “35,000 flu deaths a year” statistic put out by the CDC, for example, is a complete fabrication with no scientific basis in reality. The CDC also fabricates numbers of flu shot effectiveness, putting out completely fabricated claims such as “this year’s flu shot was 62% effective.”

    These numbers are pulled out of thin air. They have no basis in actual science or statistics. The CDC makes stuff up, including much of the mythology behind the so-called “AIDS epidemic.” (The CDC ran a massive AIDS fear mongering campaign in the 1980′s that scared the entire nation into increasing CDC funding.)

    Now, the CDC is going to attack gun ownership as if it were a disease. Anyone who expresses a desire to own a gun will be described as “mentally imbalanced” and possibly suffering from a mental disease. After all, the argument goes, what sane person would ever want to own a gun in the first place- That’s the kind of irrational, emotional and manipulative argument we’re going to hear in the years ahead. You can also expect all private gun owners to be painted as complete nut jobs and whackos.

    You can be 100% sure that as the CDC researches “the causes of gun violence,” the agency absolutely will not conclude that psychiatric drugs had anything whatsoever to do with all the school shootings. Much like the FDA, the CDC runs interference for Big Pharma, deflecting blame at every opportunity. This is the same agency that continues to promote vaccines which inject babies with mercury!

    All this makes (conventional) doctors even worse sellouts than we already suspected. Everybody knows doctors come out of medical school as Big Pharma’s dealers who routinely accept bribes from Big Pharma to prescribe their brand name drugs. But now doctors are also going to be snitching for the government.

    That’s Obama’s new society: Everybody’s a snitch. Children are encouraged by school teachers to snitch on their parents, psychiatrists are now being ordered in New York to snitch on their patients, and now doctors across the country are being ordered to snitch on their patients.

    Lisa Wade: Evidence: Fat People May be as Healthy as Thin People

    If you live in the U.S., you are absolutely bombarded with the idea that being overweight is bad for your health.  This repetition leaves one with the idea that being overweight is the same thing as being unhealthy, something that is simply not true.  In fact, people of all weights can be either healthy or unhealthy; overweight people (defined by BMI) may actually have a lower risk of premature death than “normal” weight people.  Being fat is simply not the same thing as being unhealthy.

    The Health at Every Size (HAES) movement attempts to interrupt the conflation of health and thinness by arguing that, instead of using one’s girth as an indicator of one’s health, we should be focusing on eating/exercising habits and more direct health measures (like blood pressure and cholesterol).

    A recent study offered the HAES movement some interesting ammunition in this battle. The study recruited almost 12,000 people of varying BMIs and followed them for 170 months as they adopted healthier habits.  Their conclusion- “Healthy lifestyle habits are associated with a significant decrease in mortality regardless of baseline body mass index.”

    Their data shows that among people who live unhealthy lifestyles, being overweight increases the risk of premature death, and being obese much more so.  But, among the normal weight, overweight, and obese with four healthy habits, the differential risk among them is essentially zero. For people with healthy habits, then, being fatter is not correlated with an increased relative risk of premature death.  For everyone else in between, we more-or-less see the expected reduction in mortality risk given those two poles.

    This data doesn’t refute the idea that fat matters.  In fact, it shows clearly that thinness is protective if people are doing absolutely nothing to enhance their health.  It also suggests, though, that healthy habits can make all the difference.  Overweight and obese people can have the same mortality risk as “normal” weight people; therefore, we should reject the idea that fat people are “killing themselves” with their extra pounds.  It’s simply not true.

    Growing numbers of takers, shrinking number of makers

    The “taker” society has spread all across the country, but it has manifested itself more in some states than in others, leading a writer a Forbes magazine to label them “death spiral states” because they have more takers than givers.

    “For example, in California the ratio of ‘takers versus makers’ is bigger than one. If you own a software company that employs 100 people, you’re supporting 139 other people in the state who are on the ‘takers’ list,” Fox News Insider noted.

    The other 10 states include: New Mexico (the worst of the bunch, with 153 takers to 100 workers), Illinois, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, Ohio, New York, Maine and South Carolina.

    “America is rapidly becoming a nation of takers. An increasing number of Americans expect the government to take care of them from the cradle to the grave, and they expect the government to dig into the pockets of others in order to pay for it all,” noted one observer at The Economic Collapse website.

    What happens when, nationally, there are more takers than makers- The answer is easy to see – just look across the Atlantic Ocean at Europe, where one nation after another is going bankrupt thanks to decades of cradle-to-grave social welfare programs.

    It isn’t adding up

    – Already, the United States is drowning in debt; at nearly $16.5 trillion – and Obama is demanding to raise it even further as the country approaches the current debt limit once more.

    – As Republican candidate Mitt Romney correctly noted during his campaign, nearly half of Americans – 47 percent – “receive some government payment to which they feel morally entitled,” writes Robert Samuelson for the Washington Post Writers Group, something that has become “a big part of our budget problem.”

    – In all, more than 100 million Americans are receiving some form of government (i.e. taxpayer) assistance, including 54 million receiving Medicaid.

    – The number of Americans now receiving disability has topped 9 million and what’s more, the pool of Social Security Administration money uses to pay the benefit is expected to run out by 2016. “Incoming payroll taxes only cover 79 percent of the benefit, which means families’ monthly checks will decrease by 21 percent,” Bloomberg Businessweek reported.

    – According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 49.1 percent of the population lives in a household where someone is receiving a government payment – up from 30 percent in the early 1980s and 44 percent as recently as 2008.

    What does all of this mean- It likely means the country will wind up broke and desperate, like Greece, Spain, Portugal and, increasingly, France.

    “The more people who receive benefits, the harder it’s going to be to make cuts, and it’s never popular to raise taxes,” the Wall Street Journal noted.

    Widespread hospital infections by antibiotic-resistant CRE bacteria prove the risk of U.S. healthcare facilities

    (NaturalNews) A clever opponent attacks precisely where its enemy is most vulnerable, but don’t expect it to just stop there. In what may soon become the newest, most fatal consequence in the marriage of conventional medicine and irresponsible, narcissistic technology, an emerging family of drug-resistant bacteria, that’s been quietly preying on patients of hospitals and nursing homes for more than a decade, are gaining strength, making headlines and raising concern across the country.

    Though it may have been slow to emerge, with the first known case having been reported in 2001 in North Carolina, the deadly bacteria known as Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) has since become quite efficient in its attack, killing 40 percent of infected patients — a death rate far surpassing those of other better-known infections like MRSA and C-Diff. Named for their ability to tolerate carbapenem antibiotics, which are considered the last line of defense by medical practitioners, outbreaks have now been reported in all but eight of the 50 states in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And due, at least in part, to improper laboratory analysis, many other cases remain officially undocumented. Contributing to the problem, too, is a lack of reliable national data on the full scope of the issue. Hospital staff still don’t have enough information on what trends to watch for — much less on how to effectively screen for the bacteria or identify and isolate patients who may be carrying it.

    Plus, as if to add insult to injury, the bacteria have developed the ability to share resistance genes with other members of the same family of bacteria, meaning essentially that they can jump from one species of bacteria to another, forming entirely new “carbapenem-defying bugs” along the way. The potential consequences of this worst-case-scenario type of transfer are exponential. As resistance spreads to more common strains of the bacteria, illnesses like urinary tract infections which are now considered routine and treatable, might fast become untreatable, or worse. And should this resistance trend carry over to bacteria even outside the healthcare system, people could potentially become exposed through the simplest of daily activities — a hug, or a handshake.

    Even if CRE infections were easier to identify, little hope exists for modern medicine’s ability to innovate a way out of this pretty pickle. Against CRE’s fast-adapting resistance, only a small number of medicine’s most potent treatments (including one antibiotic so toxic that it was shelved decades ago) demonstrate marginal effectiveness, at best. And there is little hope for better news than that. Even if a new, effective treatment could be conceived, there really is no financial incentive for drug companies to invest in its development. Why spend all that money on a potentially life-saving drug administered only until recovery, when there’s so much more money to be made in continuing to drain the resources of growing numbers of chronically ill people who depend on life-long medications-

    And there’s no glimmer of hope to be found among the antibiotics currently in development either, according to Gary Roselle, a doctor, and director of the Infectious Diseases Services for the Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare system. “The reality is, [CRE infections] are remarkably difficult to treat, they often have bad outcomes … and they’re increasing nationally,” Roselle says. “I’m assuming this is going to get worse, and there likely won’t be new antibiotics to treat it in the near future; so the focus has to be on prevention.”

    But the threat looms large, leaving little room for optimism among those who already suffer from compromised immune systems. Continued spread of CRE would likely cause radical devastation among hospital units specializing in techniques and treatments (organ transplants, chemotherapy) entirely dependent upon the ability to control infections in patients with impaired immune function.

    “My concern is that there aren’t a lot of methods in our tool kit that are significantly effective in curbing the spread of these infections,” says Eli Perencevich, an infectious-disease doctor and professor at the University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine. “These [bacteria] are going to greatly impact the kind of surgeries [and] treatments we can have. We’re entering the post-antibiotic era; that’s a very big problem.”

    Though the picture looks quite bleak from a medical perspective, one thing, in nature at least, holds true: Sometimes the most promising offense is a good defense. That means a healthy immune system. But immune systems don’t repair themselves overnight, and when it comes to preparing yourself for a potential CRE superbug infection, there’s just not time to play around. If you’re serious about protecting your health, you’ll want to get started sooner rather than later.     Federal appeals court says Big Pharma drug reps can legally push unapproved drug uses

    (NaturalNews) A representative from the Ireland-based biopharmaceutical company Jazz Pharmaceuticals who was previously convicted of illegally marketing prescription drugs for off-label uses has been vindicated after a federal appeals court ruled the illicit marketing to be nothing more than simple “free speech.” In a two-to-one decision made by a three-judge panel, it was determined that drug representatives can now freely advise doctors on how to prescribe drugs for unapproved uses, a ruling that could also end up proving beneficial for the natural supplement industry.

    According to The New York Times (NYT), the decision from New York’s Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in Manhattan contradicts many years’ worth of rulings that resulted in drug companies having to fork over billions of dollars in settlements and penalties to the federal government for what had previously been considered violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act). Because as we all know, unless the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gives its blessing to a particular food or drug, there is no such thing as free speech concerning its health benefits.

    But this now appears to have changed, at least for Big Pharma, which will be free to invent new uses for existing drugs, and market them for such uses apart from having to gain proper FDA approval. Doctors have long been free to prescribe drugs for off-label purposes as they see fit, of course, but drug representatives have been prohibited from engaging in this deceptive practice as the FDA considers it to be “misbranding” and “false” advertising. Unless the FDA grants express permission for a specific statement to be made about a food or drug, in other words, then that statement cannot legally be made.

    Unless the Supreme Court eventually determines this not-so-surprising federal appeals court decision to be errant, you can expect a whole lot more pharmaceutical drugs to flood the market for all kinds of new conditions, many of which will likely be fabricated to boost profits. But it may not be all bad news; however, as the ruling also sets a new precedent for what defines free speech for the supplement industry as well.

    According to the health freedom advocacy group Alliance for Natural Health – USA (ANH-USA), the decision cuts both ways. If pharmaceutical companies can now legally allow their representatives to market drugs for off-label purposes in the name of free speech, then there is no legitimate reason why supplement companies cannot do the same thing with their products in the name of free speech. This means cherry growers, for instance, would now have the freedom to print the health benefits of cherries on product packaging. And supplement manufacturers would be allowed to talk about the health benefits of their products with holistic practitioners and health food stores.

    As the old saying goes, “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander,” meaning the federal government cannot have it both ways when it comes to freedom of speech. Either everyone’s freedom of speech is now recognized, or nobody’s freedom of speech is recognized. It remains to be seen whether or not the new ruling, if it stands, will be selectively enforced to the benefit of drug companies, or universally enforced to the benefit of everyone.
